Based at the University of Bordeaux in the Institute of Molecular Sciences (ISM), the CyVi Group is an interdisciplinary group of scientists working on research methods of and applications to sustainable chemistry and life-cycle assessment. The objectives of the group’s research is to implement green and sustainable chemistry and engineering to advance the state of the science while providing services for key economic sectors in the region and beyond, such as aerospace and agri-food. The group consists of an interdisciplinary team of students, researchers and faculty whose backgrounds include chemistry, environmental and process engineering, toxicology, biology, and public health among others.

These specialties are brought together under one research setting to provide systems analysis to problems addressing environmental implications of technology, green chemistry, and sustainable manufacturing. Our current projects involve a wide-array of stakeholders and specialties including nanotechnology, renewable energy, aerospace technology, industrial chemicals recycling, and urban planning.

The group’s core focus is in the deployment and use of life-cycle assessment to solve problems for the various industry and research sectors. Life-cycle assessment is a widely-scoped environmental management tool that is at the crux of technology development and environmental research. Our research focuses on improving the methodologies of LCA in order to maximize these analyses.

The CyVi Group is headed by Guido Sonnemann, formerly of the United Nations Environmental Programme. He research director is Philippe Garrigues, who is also Director of the Institute of Molecular Sciences in which the CyVi Group sits. Philippe Loubet is associate professor, formerly of the Research Group for Environmental Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (ELSA) in Montpellier.
